Angkor Wat temple

Angkor Wat, one of the most iconic monuments in Cambodia and the world, was originally constructed in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II of the Khmer Empire. Initially dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, it later became a Buddhist temple. The temple complex is the largest religious monument in the world, covering over 162 hectares. Its grandeur and intricate design reflect the zenith of Khmer architecture and engineering.

Built as a state temple and capital city, Angkor Wat was designed to represent the mythical Mount Meru, the center of the universe in Hindu cosmology. The temple is renowned for its extensive bas-reliefs depicting Hindu mythology, historical events, and celestial themes. The five central towers symbolize Mount Meru’s peaks, while the surrounding moat represents the cosmic ocean.

After the fall of the Khmer Empire in the 15th century, the temple was abandoned for a time, but it was later rediscovered and became a symbol of national pride for Cambodians. In the 20th century, efforts to restore and preserve Angkor Wat began, and it remains a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, it draws millions of visitors annually, who come to admire its grandeur and explore its rich cultural heritage.
